1. GX TYPE 1 FONTS
In order to use PostScript Type 1 fonts under QuickDraw GX, the fonts must first be converted to the new GX font format. This conversion process is called enabling. When you install QuickDraw GX, all PostScript Type 1 fonts found in your Fonts folder are enabled for you by the GX Installer. You can find instructions for installing QuickDraw GX in the Macintosh System 7.5 Upgrade Guide. If you later install additional fonts, you must first enable them with the Type 1 Enabler application before using them under QuickDraw GX.
Before enabling your Type 1 fonts the QuickDraw GX Installer moves your Type 1 suitcases and outline font files into a folder called • Archived Type 1 Fonts • located inside your System Folder. If you have enough space on your hard drive or volume, you may want to leave the original Type 1 fonts around or back them up.
2. USING THE TYPE 1 ENABLER
The Type 1 Enabler requires System 7.1 or newer. There is a Help section at the bottom of the windows which explains each feature as the mouse cursor passes over buttons and windows. Help can be disabled by clearing the Help checkbox.
To enable fonts click on Find Suitcases in the main window and choose a volume or folder containing Type 1 fonts. You can either add font suitcases individually to the list of fonts to be enabled or let the Enabler search for fonts for you.
When the Enabler finishes searching, a list of available suitcases will be displayed. You can add to this list, view the contents of an individual font suitcase, or remove an suitcase from the list. Suitcases with similar names or those that cannot be enabled will not be listed.
Before enabling your Type 1 fonts the Enabler moves your Type 1 suitcases into a folder called • Archived Type 1 Fonts • located inside your Fonts Folder. After your fonts are enabled, the Enabler will restart your system.
The Type 1 Enabler only enables Type 1 fonts. If the Type 1 Enabler encounters a suitcase containing Type 3 fonts, it displays the message “Cannot enable fonts in this suitcase. Its associated Type 1 font files contain bad data.”
The Type 1 Enabler does not enable hybrid fonts. If you see an error dialog when the Type 1 Enabler attempts to enable Optima or ITC Eras, it may be because you have an old version of these fonts which cannot be enabled. If you are a registered owner of Optima or ITC Eras, call Adobe Systems Technical Support at (206) 628-2757 to obtain an upgrade to the non-hybrid versions of these families.
Be sure and remove Type 3 and hybrid fonts before you use your system.
3. REMOVING DUPLICATE FONTS
In order for QuickDraw GX to properly manage your installed fonts, you should make sure you do not have duplicate fonts installed in the System Folder. Remove any duplicates fonts that you find.
If you are unsure what "flavor" of fonts you have installed, either standard Type 1 fonts or GX Type 1 fonts, or if you have removed QuickDraw GX from your system, it may be best to re-install your fonts from scratch. This will save you time in the long run, if a misplaced font causes problems, such as not rasterizing or printing.
4. Compatibility Issues
After Dark 3.0 is not compatible with the Type 1 Enabler. You should contact Berkeley systems for an upgrade to After Dark 3.0b. You can also turn After Dark 3.0 off, enable your fonts, then turn After Dark back on.
The QuickDraw GX Installer will attempt to enable your substitution fonts that shipped with SuperATM or Adobe Acrobat. You must upgrade to SuperATM 3.8.2 or Adobe Acrobat 2.0.1 in order to run these programs under GX.
5. ADOBE TYPE MANAGER NOTES
ATM is installed with QuickDraw GX. Type 1 fonts will display and print properly only if ATM is installed and loaded. ATM will work with and without QuickDraw GX installed, however you need to be sure what set of fonts you have installed. Type 1 fonts enabled for use under QuickDraw GX will not rasterize or print without GX present.
Type 1 fonts appear as Geneva when displaying a character at a point size less than one half the size of the smallest bitmap available. For example, a font with a single 24 point bitmap would display Geneva at 11 points and lower.
